6. BATIK OF TERENGGANU

A craft is an activity such as weaving, carving, or pottery that involves making things skillfully by hand, often in a traditional way. In Malaysia we have various types of craft based on place and state. For examples, Batik in Terengganu, Wau Bulan in Kelantan and Labu Sayong in Perak.

Firstly, based on all the crafts, I like Batik in Terengganu because its made by skill of painting. Batik painting is a wax resistant technique and also requires the skill of sketching classic or modern patterns. This depends on the customer's request. For me, I prefer the classic design that shows the traditional aura.

Secondly, there are four basics stages in producing a batik painting. They are waxing dyeing, scraping and ironing. These basic stages are quite simple. However, the skill comes not only in the intricate mixing, but it complicated colour work. Each successive colour is placed on top of another., and thus altered by the one before.

Thirdly, the step is producing a batik painting is to draw an outline of the design on paper using a black felt-tip pen. Then the motif is copied on a piece of cotton cloth. Usually a white piece of cloth is used. In the outline we should decide the colours to be used in each areas.

Lastly, batik makes interesting gifts for friends. There are easy, light and versatile and make good decorative items. Batik is also produced in a large scale as various household items and souvenirs. I am confident that the batik industry will thrive in the country. It is a gift to the world of art.
